FORTHCOMING MEDIA GUIDEBOOK

A brief (200 pp) general media guide for anthropologists and social scientists, to be published by Mitch Allen, of Left Coast Press.

I'm currently seeking short contributions from both academics and science media to be included in the guide. If you've had experience with media, and have best practices, cautionary tales, or advice you'd  be willing to share, I'd love to see what you have.

NOTE: This is an informal book - I'm NOT looking for academic articles. Submissions can range from 250-500 words.

GUIDELINES & SUGGESTIONS

• You can submit material you've already written, as long as you have
permission to reprint it. You can also modify the original to make it unrecognizable.

• If you've written Anthropology Newsletter columns on working with media,
articles or papers on these topics, or have spoken about your media
experiences in the field (at sessions or elsewhere), consider submitting
them.

• You can include brief how-to tips, best practices, and techniques for
working with media.

Based on your experiences, what do you think works and
what doesn't?

* Maintaining your identify as an anthropologist during interviews.

* Communicating effectively during TV and radio interviews.

* Working with film crews in fieldwork situations.

* Using web sites to communicate your work directly to the public.

* Speaking with both science writers and general reporters about your work.
